Have you ever wondered how people become content creators? I have asked myself this question a million times and after doing some research I found 3 common steps to becoming a content creator. If you are in the same boat, here are some tips I have found that several freelance content creators have used. By following these steps, you can create a good

foundation for your upcoming career as a content creator in the field you are passionate about.

Step 1 – What are you passionate about?

The first step to becoming a content creator is to figure out what your passion is, so that this can become your niche. Ask yourself, what am I good at? Do I enjoy doing this if I did not get paid? Having established this, you will be able to keep creating content within this field no matter what comes in the way and the size of your pay check. This will also help you focus on your field of interest and what the market is looking for. What can you contribute with, that this industry is lacking? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you create content that are relevant and stay updated on upcoming trends and demand in the market. Your passion might be traveling, but seen that we have had a pandemic for the last two years, it forces you to think outside the box during a time period where this is difficult. But, because you are passionate about it you come up with other ways to share your experiences as a traveler and might even explore your own neighbourhood or city for other travellers that have yet to visit the place.

Step 2 – Have a set goal and business plan!

The second step requires you to set a goal, preferable a SMART-goal. This gives you the opportunity to measure your work and progress as a content creator. Be specific, you need to find a goal that can be measured and tracked. If your goal is to gain more followers, set a number that is realistic for where you are right now and take a look at how you are performing at the moment. Create a business plan along with your goal, so that you know how you will monetize your performance and structure your work time. All social media platforms show analytical data that you can use to report your performance for each post you create, this will help you understand what needs to be changed and what works.

Step 3 – Where will you create content?

The third step will be where you decided what type of content you wish to create as well as what platform to use. Will it be written content, such as a blog? Are you going to create videos and post it on YouTube or short videos for TikTok? Or will you stick with photography for Instagram or Pinterest? You can combine platforms and skills, which means you post on several channels and use both writing and pictures as your content. This will go back to what you are passionate and good at. By choosing platforms and type of content you wish to create, it will give you the opportunity to learn the algorithm for those platforms and what your target audience is looking for. Improve your skills and learn as much as you can about your platform and the type of content you wish to create.
